On the traces of tin mining

After you have moved into your rooms, you can strengthen yourself at the lunch buffet for the upcoming hike to the Altenberg visitor mine. There you will be taken into the hard and dangerous, but fascinating working world of the Altenberg miners 1. The museum offers you a comprehensive overview of the 550-year history of Altenberg’s tin ore mining, whose origins date back to around 1440 and which only ended in 1991 when the mine was closed down. At the historical tin wash and the open-air exhibition you will experience a broad spectrum of mining activities from the centuries-old extraction of ore underground to the modern processing of ore. After the visit of the historical tin laundry you can become a miner or mountain woman yourself and dig your own little treasures out of the washing trough2. After the following return hike you will strengthen yourself together at the evening buffet.
You can arrange the evening freely or visit the bathing area “Caterpillar’s Nest3.

1 entrance fee for the museum 2,50 €
2 dig small treasures from the washing trough 1,00 €
3 The prices for the “Caterpillar Nest” bathing complex apply: see table “Additional modules”.

The tour takes you to Zinnwald after a hearty breakfast, where you have packed enough food for the day. Passing the Aschergraben you walk through the Miriquidi Forest to the visitor mine “Unites Hermaphrodite to Tin Forest”. There, equipped with protective clothing and a lamp, you will enter the depths of the exhibition mine and learn many interesting facts about the region’s mining history during a 1.5-hour tour. You visit an underground border and can experience the unique atmosphere of an underwater lake. If you still have enough strength in your legs on the return hike, you can take a detour over the highest mountain in our region – the Kahlberg (905 m above sea level). The rest of the evening can end with a soccer or volleyball tournament after a barbecue (weather permitting).

1 Admission to the visitor mine “Vereinigt Zwitterfeld zu Zinnwald” 4,50 €.

If you still haven’t had enough of mining, you can go on the ping hike today1. Impressively the Pinge lies directly at the edge of the city area of Altenberg. This huge rock crater is one of the most striking mining monuments of the region with its depth of about 150 m and its diameter of 400 m. Alternatively, you can simply take a trip to the summer toboggan run2 with adventure playground before you head back home. Afterwards return journey
